Physics Personal Statement

So since I have officially chosen my university I suppose it is now okay to make you personal statement public. I hope it helps future generations of physics applicants? And probably myself next time I get the feeling of 'why on earth am I studying physics, I am an utter imbecile'!

As a passionate student of Physics, structures in distant galaxies fascinate me and I am captivated by the possibility of a theory of everything. I find a few equations are good for the soul and when you look at some of the practical applications of Physics in our everyday life, I am truly astounded by human achievement; but it is not enough. I need to know more than I do. It is a desire to learn all that Physics can offer that drives me onwards in my studies.

I know that a degree in Physics is the ideal subject for me for several reasons. I have a genuine love of Physics that originated from an affinity for Mathematics and has really developed this past year. This is due to the fact that I have looked at the subject in more depth than in previous years and because several visits have encouraged my interest. In particular I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the Diamond Light Accelerator facilities in Oxford, the Royal Observatory in Greenwich and the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition. I find that Physics is a subject that naturally extends beyond the classroom. For me this is in the form of membership of the Institute of Physics, private reading of books such as 'The Brief History of Time' and 'New Physics' as well as magazines including a subscription to 'the Physics Review'. Watching scientific programmes and reading the accompanying books have helped me to develop my understanding of various topics, especially space exploration, as has researching the vast resources of the Internet. I have always enjoyed a challenge and Physics continues to push me to the best that I can be. By continuing my studies into Physics I will gain an understanding of fascinating topics as well as a chance  to build on my problem solving skills, gain Mathematical insight and develop my research techniques.

I firmly believe I have the skills and personal traits necessary for undergraduate study. I have excellent time management skills as exemplified by my dedication to studying seven AS level subjects this past year without compromising other commitments. I also tutor several younger students in Mathematics and Physics as well as contribute to the school community as Deputy Head girl, a lower school Prefect and a member of the Chaplaincy Team. I have a determination to do well, a high level of self discipline as well as other independent study skills; all of which I feel have been demonstrated this past year in my study of AS Further Mathematics. The majority of this course has been and will be by remote tuition outside of normal school hours. I believe I am academically capable of following your course and progressing well through it, as demonstrated by membership of NAGTY as well as school awards for five different subjects, including Mathematics and Physics, in my secondary education.

I have attended several University courses this year, at Nottingham, Cambridge and Queen Mary London, which have given me an insight into the lecture hall, tuition group and computer laboratory learning environments. Several of these lectures introduced me to entirely new areas of Physics such as ultra cold atoms and fundamental particles which I found fascinating. Acceptance onto the Queen Mary summer school week allowed me the opportunity of contributing to some real research into condensed matter Physics involving Zeolites. I can confidently say that I am not afraid of hard work, as shown frequently in my school life but also in my perseverance with the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme at both bronze and silver levels. My experiences in this scheme have allowed me to expand my organisational, teamwork and motivational capabilities.

I eagerly await the next year as it signifies not only the next step in my education but most importantly the chance to explore Physics at a higher level.  I look forward to all the things a University with a reputation for excellence can offer and I thank you for your consideration.

Decisions

So I finally whittled my list of 12 universities down to 5! I have no idea of how I'm going to prioritize them all if I get offers but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I'm not all too confident that I will so maybe I won't have to cross that bridge at all!

So in alphabetical order I have Imperial, Nottingham, Oxford, Sussex, Warwick! I'm really pleased with my decision because they are places I would love to go to and I have a range of entry grades from A*AA - AAB so I feel reasonably comfortable. Also I like that I still have a range of city and campus as well as having different distances from home so I haven't made any decisions that will limit me later. To be honest, at the end of the day it won't particularly matter where I go because I'll be doing physics all day and I'll love that wherever I am!

So now that's decided and I have practically finished my personal statement I'm almost ready to send it off! I'm pretty happy with it actually! I'm dying to share it with you but I probably shouldn't post it just yet... But I'm really pleased with the way I managed to get my excitement for physics across without sounding like a complete nutcase! Well I hope so at least! I just have to let a couple of my teachers check through it for me and then I'll apply and then I'll wait! I'm so looking forward to that last stage!

The other 4 posts on my list will have to wait until after I've finished another physics presentation...

Personal Statement: take 1

I've been away for a while with no excuse other than I went on holiday where I had no Internet whatsoever for a week! It was a lovely holiday and as usual being out in the country, seeing and subconsciously identifying river and coastal characteristics I have rediscovered my love of Geography! Well, physical geography at least and maybe love is a slight exaggeration.... However I am prepared to put up with another year of the subject although my friends and family might argue that I was never seriously going to drop anything anyway... I suppose it all depends on my grades now!

While on holiday there were wonderfully clear skies and you could see millions and millions of stars. My bedroom had a perfect sloping window where you could see them from and I felt infinitely cool sleeping under the stars, well sort of... Of course I didn't have the internet though so I couldn't use the app! I suddenly see the flaw of this app - you either have clouds but an internet signal or stars but no internet signal so I think I'll just delete it!
I decided to have a go at writing a personal statement yesterday and since I had no idea where to start I decided to write and see where that took me so I came out with this:

So, the dreaded personal statement. It’s quite hard to write about yourself and then it’s very difficult to convey enthusiasm as well as put the sense of true belonging, total immersion in a subject into words. But, hey, I always liked a challenge and that quality is probably what first started me down the path of becoming a physicist.
Well, it was either that or there are two other possibilities. The first alternative being a particularly engaging teacher who encouraged her girls to take physics, an encouragement which came close to bribery, black mail and shameless flattery at times! The other alternative is that I saw physics as an opportunity to widen my mathematical knowledge and if that meant I had to put up with learning some science on the side then so be it. So of course, you see why I stick to the more romantic option of the three, if you don’t agree with my use of romantic at least it doesn’t make it sound like I was reluctant because I wasn’t really.
I know it is the same for everyone but I have always been fascinated by space science, I mean who wouldn’t be? The earliest I can remember was doing a project on the sixties in primary school. I used to love project work and I got completely absorbed in the space race part of my decade, I felt the same feelings as the men and women from the era watching the moon landing with stunned awe and reverie, I felt like Neil Armstrong placing my foot on an alien moon leading the way for mankind into a new era of discovery, I felt like a student finding enlightenment. Yeah, I was just as silly and sentimental then as I am now!
Anyway, that’s not relevant, you don’t want to read about how I was then, how wide my eyes went at my first trip to the planetarium, you want to know who I am now. You want to check I’m not going to drop out after one term. You want to see that I will do well. You want to see youthful enthusiasm, energy and passion. You want to see that I’m worth your while. I’m writing to say hello, I won’t, I will, here it is and I am.
Don't worry I know it's a load of old poop so I won't be using it! That's half of my word count and I haven't got any of my spider diagram in it! I suppose I'll just start again, it couldn't possibly be much worse! Maybe tomorrow...
